What is the CM Cares Scheme 2024?
CM Cares Scheme is a girls’ welfare scheme launched by the Government of Puducherry. The complete official name of the scheme is “CM Cares Scheme for the Empowerment of New Born Girl Child of the Union territory of Puducherry Rules, 2023”. The scheme aims to ensure the financial security of a girl child, serving as a means to empower her.
Under this scheme, an initial deposit of Rs. 50,000 will be made in the Post Office or a Scheduled Commercial Bank in the Union Territory of Puducherry. This will be done under the name of the girl child. This account must be linked to a personal savings or current account held by either of the parents or guardians. The sum will be placed in the Sukanya Samriddhi Account, held in either a Post Office or a Scheduled Commercial Bank within the Union Territory of Puducherry, within 90 days from the child’s birth. CM Cares Scheme Financial Assistance 2024
The assistance amount of Rs. 50,000 will be placed in a Post Office or Scheduled Commercial Bank in the Union Territory of Puducherry, under the name of the Girl Child, linked to a personal savings or current account held by either parent or guardian.
- The payment will be made by depositing the amount in the Sukanya Samriddhi Account within 90 days of the girl child’s birth at a Post Office or Scheduled Commercial Bank in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
- The original Passbook, bearing the scheme’s name, will be provided to the parents or guardian.
- The maturity value will be disbursed to the girl child upon reaching twenty-one years of age.
What is Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme?
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), launched exclusively for girl children by the Ministry of Finance on January 22, 2015, aims to cover their education and marriage expenses. Encouraging parents to build a fund for these needs, the scheme allows applications through Post Offices or branches of Public and Private Sector Banks, such as HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank. A parent or legal guardian can open an account for a girl child below 10 years, limited to one account per child, and a family can open a maximum of two SSY accounts.
With a minimum annual investment of ₹250 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000, the scheme has a 21-year maturity period and an 8.0% interest rate. Crucially, the principal amount, interest earned, and maturity benefits are all tax-exempt, with the principal amount deductible under section 80C, up to ₹1,50,000.

CM Cares Scheme Application Process 2024
CM Cares Scheme applies to the girls born or after March 17, 2023. To take the benefit of the scheme, the beneficiary needs to visit the nearby Post Office or a bank where the parents have their savings account. There only, the Sukanya Samriddhi Account on behalf of the girl child will be open and an amount of Rs 50,000 will be deposited by the Department of Women and Child Development.
Parents of the newborn can either visit the Department of Women and Child Development or the Bank/Post office to open the Sukanya Samriddhi Account.
