What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjawla Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, also known as PMUY is a flagship scheme introduced by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on May 01, 2016, with an aim to provide clean cooking fuel such as LPG available to rural households or to the household that lays below Poverty Line. The aim is also to replace the usage of traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes, and more as the usage of traditional cooking fuels had adverse impacts on the health of rural women as well as on the environment.

PMUY Subsidy: The Cabinet approved a subsidy of Rs.200 per year for 12 fuel cylinders weighing 14.5 kg. The total expenditure approved by the cabinet for PMUY will be Rs.6,100 crore for the financial year 2022-23 and Rs.7,680 crore for 2023-24. The average LPG consumption of PMUY consumers has increased by 20 percent from 3.01 refills in 2019-20 to 3.68 in 2021-22.

PMUY in News | Ujjwala 3.0 Launched on September 2023

On September 13, 2023, the government launched the third phase of the widely popular Ujjwala scheme. This initiative aims to provide free gas connections, along with a stove and a refill, to 7.5 million impoverished households for a period of three years. With this phase, the total coverage under the Ujjwala scheme now extends to 103.5 million households.

During a media briefing on decisions made by the Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced the government’s approval for the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) to offer 7.5 million free liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) connections until March 31, 2026.

Thakur explained that under the scheme, beneficiaries would receive a deposit-free gas connection, including a stove and the first 14.2kg cylinder at no cost. The expenditure for one such connection, amounting to ₹2,200, will initially be covered by state-run oil marketing companies, with the government reimbursing them later. According to Thakur, the estimated cost of the scheme is ₹1,650 crore.

About Ujjawala 2.0

After the successful implementation of PMUY 1.0, by providing 8 crore LPG connections to rural households, the Prime Minister launched PMUY 2.0 on August 10, 2021, with a target of adding one crore LPG connections. Ujjwala 2.0 will help achieve the Prime Minister’s vision of universal access to LPG. Let’s look at some features of the Ujjwala 2.0 scheme in the list below. 

Features of PMUY 2.0 Scheme 

  • Under Ujjwala 2.0, the government has a target of adding One Crore additional LPG connections.
  • This one crore additional PMUY connections are to provide deposit-free LPG connections to those low-income families who could not be covered under the earlier phase of PMUY.
  • Ujjwala 2.0 provides the first refill and hotplate free of cost to the beneficiaries. Also, the enrollment procedure will require minimum paperwork.
  • In Ujjwala 2.0, migrants will not be required to submit ration cards or address proof. A self-declaration for both a ‘family declaration’ and a ‘proof of address’ will be enough.

 Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Eligibility Criteria 

In order to be eligible for the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the beneficiary should belong to any of the following categories: 

  1. An adult woman belonging to a poor household and not having an LPG connection in her household
  2. Eligible as per SECC 2011 list
  3. Belongs to SC/ST households, be a beneficiary of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Forest dwellers, Most Backward Classes (MBC), Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes, People residing in river islands (Beneficiary will submit supporting document)
  4. If she is not falling in the above 2 categories, then she can stake her claim to be a beneficiary under Poor household by submitting 14-point declaration (as per prescribed format).

  • Valid Photo ID
  • Ration Card issued by the State from which application is being made/ other State Govt. document certifying family composition/ Self-Declaration as per Annexure I (for migrant applicants)
  • Proof of Address – Aadhaar will be taken as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address if the connection is required in the same address. In that case only Aadhaar is sufficient.
  • Bank Account Number and IFSC.
  • Aadhaar (not mandatory for Assam and Meghalaya)
  • Passport size photograph

What are the Benefits of Ujjwala 2.0?

A cash assistance of Rs. 1600 for a connecting 14.2kg cylinder or Rs. 1150 for a 5 kg cylinder will be provided to the beneficiary. The breakup is provided below. 

  • Security Deposit of Cylinder – Rs. 1250 for 14.2 kg cylinder/ Rs. 800 for 5 kg cylinder
  • Pressure Regulator – Rs. 150
  • LPG Hose – Rs. 100

  • Inspection/ Installation/ Demonstration charges – Rs. 75

How to Apply for Ujjwala 2.0 Online Registration?

Before applying for the Ujjwala 2.0 scheme, it is important to keep all the required documents ready beforehand (Documents are mentioned below). After that, follow the given steps below for Ujjwala 2.0 online registration.
