The Ladli Beti Scheme stands out as one of the most renowned and effective initiatives aimed at empowering girls in the Union Territory. This scheme has been launched for the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh for the birth of a girl child. It will positively impact millions of families, breaking down social and economic barriers that hinder girls from reaching their maximum potential. The program provides tangible benefits and has fostered awareness and cultivated positive attitudes toward girls within society. The Ladli Beti Scheme serves as a stellar illustration of the government’s ability to foster and promote the development of girls in India. In this article, we are going to talk about the scheme in detail.
What is the Ladli Beti Scheme 2024?
The Ladli Beti Scheme is a social assistance program for newborn girls in the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh. This scheme has been launched to curb the declining female sex ratio. Under this scheme, eligibility for coverage extends to girls born on or after April 1, 2015, with parents or guardians having an annual income not exceeding Rs 75,000. Upon reaching 21 years of age, the female child is entitled to an approximate sum of Rs 6.50 lakhs. Beneficiaries will receive Rs 1000 per month, deposited into their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
As mentioned above, the primary goal of this initiative is to counteract the declining female sex ratio and to ensure that the girl child does not become a financial burden on her parents or guardians during marriage.
The program operates as a hybrid deposit plan, comprising two phases:
- Phase 1 involves a recurring deposit for 14 years, with completion scheduled one month after the receipt of the last installment. During this phase, the J&K Government contributes a monthly amount of ₹1000.
- After the maturity of Phase 1 (recurring deposit account), the account transitions to Phase 2, which involves a Cumulative Term Deposit (CCR) for 7 years. Upon reaching 21 years of age, the female child is entitled to an approximate sum of Rs 6.50 lakhs. This unique approach seeks to foster financial security and independence for the girl child in the long term.

Ladli Beti Scheme Objectives
- The primary goal of this initiative is to counteract the declining female sex ratio and to ensure that the girl child does not become a financial burden on her parents or guardians during marriage.
- The recent decline in the ratio of females to males in the population has prompted the implementation of this strategy, with the primary objective of halting this unfavorable trend.
- The strategy aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents or guardians once the female child is married.
- This will be achieved by ensuring that she receives adequate financial support.
Ladli Beti Scheme Benefits 2024
- The J&K Government commits to contributing Rs. 1000/- per month from the birth of the girl child or the account opening date for the subsequent 14 years, totaling Rs. 168,000/- from the Union Territories (UT).
- Phase I (RD Account) strictly permits no credits other than the monthly Rs. 1000/- contribution by the J&K Government.
- Upon the maturity of Phase I, the account seamlessly progresses to Phase II (Cumulative Term Deposit account).
- No partial withdrawals or foreclosures are permissible during any phase of the scheme.
- Maturity benefits are disbursed to the beneficiary upon reaching 21 years of age, 21 years after the first installment, or 85 months after the last installment, whichever is later.
- The amount is credited to the savings bank account of the girl child, who can reinvest it in any deposit plan of the bank at card rates.
- The nomination facility does not apply to this scheme. In the unfortunate event of the girl child’s demise, the account is immediately closed, and the balance amount along with accrued interest reverts to the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
- If the beneficiary passes away before turning 21, the Recurring Deposit account/Term Deposit account is closed before maturity without pre-payment charges.
- Transferring the account from one branch to another is not permitted, even if the girl child shifts to a location different from the city or locality where the account was opened.
- The beneficiary, parent, or guardian must provide a ‘life certificate of the beneficiary (girl child),’ certified by a gazetted officer or the principal of the school/college where she is enrolled, every three years and at the time of maturity.
- Since the scheme targets households with an annual income of less than Rs. 75,000/-, no TDS will be deducted, provided the guardian/beneficiary submits Form 15G/15H each year and possesses a valid PAN.
