What is the Karnataka Bhagyalaxmi Scheme 2024?

Karnataka Bhagyalaxmi Scheme is a welfare scheme launched by the Department of Women and Child Development in 2006-07. It serves as a proactive approach to augment the number of girl children in the state, particularly within below-poverty line (BPL) households. The primary objective of the Karnataka government’s initiative is to encourage the birth of female children within families classified as below the poverty line (BPL) and to enhance the status of the girl child, both within the family and society at large. Financial aid is extended to the girl child through her mother, father, or natural guardian, contingent upon meeting specific conditions.

Upon enrollment and subsequent verification by the Department, a sum of Rs. 19,300 is deposited in the name of the first girl beneficiary and Rs. 18,350 in the name of the second girl beneficiary of the same family with the financial institution (LIC). Upon reaching 18 years of age, the first girl beneficiary, as per the Government of Karnataka order number, receives a maturity amount of Rs. 1,00,097, while the second girl beneficiary, upon fulfilling all conditions of the scheme, receives Rs. 1,00,052. The primary goals of this initiative are aimed at alleviating apprehensions through the following means:

Karnataka Bhagyalaxmi Scheme Benefits

  • Health insurance coverage for the child, with a maximum limit of Rs. 25,000 per year (only for girls born between April 01, 2006 and July 31, 2008). No health insurance was provided to the girls born on or after August 01, 2008. 
  • Provision of an annual scholarship ranging from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1,000, applicable up to the tenth standard for the girl child (only for girls born between April 01, 2006 and July 31, 2008). 
  • The scheme aims to encourage the birth of female children in economically disadvantaged families, elevating their status within both the family and society.
  • Financial assistance is provided to the girl child through her mother, father, or natural guardian, contingent upon meeting specific conditions.
  • In addition to the aforementioned benefits, parents receive Rs. 1 lakh in case of an accident and Rs. 42,500 in the event of the natural death of the beneficiary. (only for girls born between April 01, 2006 and July 31, 2008).
  • Upon reaching 18 years of age, the beneficiary is entitled to a payment of Rs. 34,751.
  • Certain interim payments, such as annual scholarships and insurance benefits, are made available to the beneficiary as long as the eligibility criteria continue to be met.

For female children born between April 01, 2006 – July 31, 2008,

Within the framework of the “Bhagyalakshmi” scheme, a sum of Rs. 10,000 is deposited in the Life Insurance Corporation of India under the name of each beneficiary, namely the girl child, in the form of a fixed deposit. Upon reaching the age of 18, the fixed deposit matures, and the beneficiary is entitled to receive the maturity value, set at Rs. 34,751. If a second child from the same family is enrolled in the scheme, the maturity amount increases to Rs. 40,918.

For female children born After August 01, 2008,

Please Note: 

  • To qualify for the maturity amount, the recipient must complete education up to the 8th standard and refrain from marrying before reaching the age of 18. 
  • If the beneficiary continues education through the 11th and 12th standards, she becomes eligible for an annual scholarship of Rs. 1200 per class passed under the “Shiksha Sahayoga Yojana” offered by LIC. 
  • In the unfortunate event of the beneficiary’s demise within 18 years, the bond amount under the “Bhagyalakshmi” scheme is forfeited.
  • Parents of the beneficiaries from landless rural families are entitled to receive benefits under the Janashree Insurance Scheme.

Karnataka Bhagyalaxmi Scheme Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for the benefits under the Bhagyalakshmi Scheme, individuals must satisfy the following criteria:

  • The scheme applies to girl children born into families categorized as below the poverty line (BPL) after March 31, 2006.
  • Registration of the girl child with the scheme should occur within one year from her date of birth.
  • The Bhagyalakshmi scheme extends its benefits to a maximum of two female siblings within a single BPL family. Therefore, if a family has more than two girls, only two of them can avail of the scheme’s benefits.
  • The child must not be engaged in child labor.
  • It is a requirement for the girl child to receive vaccinations or immunizations through the program facilitated by the Indian health department.
  • The limitation of having no more than two children applies to those born on or after April 1, 2015. In the event of the birth of twins or triplets during the initial delivery, all female children are entitled to receive the benefits.
  • The child should complete education up to at least the 8th grade and should not be married before attaining 18 years of age.
